There’s a new kind of website popping up everywhere. You know the type, technically functional, reasonably tidy, built in an afternoon by someone typing prompts into an AI tool instead of hiring a designer. And we get it, it’s fast, it’s cheap, and it looks like a website.

At Mediamojo, we’re not here to tell you AI is a threat to good web design. We use it ourselves, every day, to work faster and smarter. But we’ve also watched enough of these AI-generated sites fail to convert, fail to rank, and fail to connect with the humans they’re meant to serve, and we think it’s worth talking honestly about why.

AI can build a website. It can’t build a relationship.

A website’s real job was never just “exist on the internet.” It’s to make a stranger trust you enough to click, enquire, buy, or come back. That’s an emotional and social transaction, not a technical one. AI only built websites run the risk of destroying that trust, coming across as a sterile, cookie cutter solution without any soul, originality or understanding that connects on an emotional level.

Humans are still, for now, and probably for a long while, better at reading a room. A good designer understands:

  • What makes your customers hesitate before buying
  • Which words feel authentic to your brand voice, and what sounds generic
  • How colour, spacing, and imagery create a feeling, not just a layout
  • How the story behind the business can resonate with users and create long term relationships

AI models are trained on patterns from millions of other websites. That’s exactly why so many AI-built sites start to look, sound, and feel the same — competent, but forgettable. They’re built from a templated process, not from empathy. Real understanding of a business’s culture and people give a website it’s life and ability to connect.

The cost of “good enough”

A DIY AI site might tick the box of “we have a website now.” But the real cost shows up later, in the numbers that actually matter to a business:

  • Lower conversion rates, because the messaging doesn’t connect emotionally
  • Higher bounce rates, because the experience doesn’t feel considered or trustworthy
  • Weaker brand recall, because nothing about the site is individually distinctive
  • Missed opportunities, because there’s no strategic thinking behind why a page exists, only that it does

So where does AI actually help?

This is the part we think gets lost in the “AI vs humans” argument. It’s not a competition — it’s a workflow shift, and the businesses that get it right are the ones combining the best of both worlds.

We use AI to:

  • Support research:  understanding a client’s industry, competitors, and audience faster than manual research alone
  • Streamline production:  automating repetitive build tasks so we can spend more time on the things that actually move the needle: user experience, storytelling, and conversion strategy
  • Sharpen technical performance:  using AI-assisted tools for testing, accessibility checks, and performance optimisation

The result isn’t “human vs AI.” It’s AI doing the heavy lifting on the mechanical stuff, freeing us designers to focus on the parts that require creativity, judgement, taste, and genuine understanding of people and behaviour.

The next frontier: optimising for how AI finds you, too

Here’s the twist a lot of businesses haven’t caught up to yet: it’s not just about optimising your site using AI, it’s about optimising your site for AI.

Search behaviour is changing fast. People are increasingly getting answers from AI assistants and AI-powered search summaries instead of clicking through ten blue links that Google used to provide. That means Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) now has a companion discipline: AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) making sure AI tools can find, understand, and accurately represent your business when someone asks a question that you should be the answer to.

For you to have a successfully AEO presence, you’ll need to adhere to the following:

  • Clear, structured content that AI systems can easily parse and quote, proper headings, well-organised information, and content that directly answers real questions
  • Strong topical authority: genuinely useful content on the subjects your business is expert in, not just keyword-stuffed pages, it needs to be real and relevant information
  • Technical fundamentals done properly: fast load times, clean code, structured data markup, and mobile performance, all of which both traditional SEO and AI tools reward
  • Accurate, consistent information about your business across your site and the web, since AI tools cross-reference multiple sources when forming an answer

This is where the human-plus-AI workflow really earns its keep. AI tools can help identify gaps and opportunities at scale. But it still takes human strategic thinking to decide what your business should be known for, and human creativity to build content that’s genuinely worth exploring — not just optimised, but actual relevant creative design.

The bottom line

AI is a phenomenal tool. It’s not a replacement for understanding people. The businesses that will win online over the next few years won’t be the ones who reject AI, and they won’t be the ones who outsource all their thinking to it either, they’ll be the ones who use AI to move faster, while still leaning on real human creativity, empathy, and strategy to make sure their website actually connects.

That’s the balance we build for at Mediamojo: AI-enhanced process, human-led outcomes.

Want a website that’s built to connect with real people, and built smart enough to be found by AI, too? Let’s talk.
